  1. Vannevar,
I have been following your blog now for close to a year. Maybe it's because my wife and I are cyclists, and maybe because we lived in Danville, PA before moving to Winchester, VA, and maybe because I follow some of the DC Randonneur blogs and you have been mentioned there, but anyway, I enjoy your stories and your perspective on things. I have one question though: What and where is the "Bastille"? You refer to it often but I cannot figure out what it is. I asked one of the people I work with that lived in Pittsburgh but she doesn't know either. Keep up the big miles and the great posts! Thanks.

  2. Kind Reader, the Bastille is a local nickname for a building once known as Western Penitentiary (see https://www.flickr.com/photos/kjimbo/3702026945/) which was decommissioned and later reopened as SCI Pittsburgh (state correctional institute). see image It's a scary, imposing 160-year old place.

See this wiki entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Correctional_Institution_%E2%80%93_Pittsburgh for more, including it's role in Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Story".

Thank you for your comment and your reading the blog, I appreciate them both! Cheers, V.
